What An Editor Can Do

So much more than just a proof-read.

An editor can…

    • Give you advice on your manuscript if you are stuck, or if you’re just not sure if your writing is hitting the mark
    • Help you put your ideas on paper with a developmental edit.  A developmental edit is a  collaborative, coaching process which can help you develop an idea into an outline before you begin your manuscript, it may also support you through writing your first draft or it may even mean a major rewrite
    • Provide a second set of eyes to make sure the story in your mind has been conveyed to the page. This may include examining the plot, characters, pace, point of view and voice
    • Undertake a structural edit, this examines the text to ensure it is laid out in a manner that conveys the story the most convincingly
    • Study the text at a sentence level and check if the sentences are clear, well punctuated and the language appropriate for the intended audience, this is called a line- or copy-edit
    • Check the formatting of your document is consistent and will translate seamlessly into publishing software such as InDesign or ePub
    • Give you support if you are submitting to publishers or want to self-publish.

An editor can always help with a proof-read but this is usually only done once you are 100% happy with what you have written and the manuscript is ready to go to the printer.

Services

i

Manuscript Assessment

An honest, subjective review of your work, based on your aims and intentions, in the form of a report. It examines key aspects of the manuscript, such as the opening, narrative style, subject matter, voice, point of view, plot, characterisation. It will also help identify readership and positioning within the current publishing market. Recommendations for further development will be outlined.

h

Manuscript Development

Once you commence writing, manuscript development is specific advice on any or all aspects of your manuscript, based on your original brief. Usually in the form of notes or comments in the text.

j

Structural Edit

Are all the key passages in the manuscript in the optimal order? Is there a better way of presenting your material? Are there any mistakes? Having two minor characters with the same name is not uncommon! Usually direct editing in the document and often combined with a copy edit.

l

Copy edit

Your manuscript is reviewed at sentence level. Some of the questions addressed are: Is the language appropriate for your intended reader? Does the sentence length fit with the pace and narrative style? Are you presenting your material the way you intend. Is it grammatically correct and within the intended style?

Coaching

Writing can be an isolated endeavour but having someone to talk things through with can help overcome writer’s block or provide some encouragement when you need it. Writers’ groups are very effective at providing this support but if you need more personalised support, maybe just on one aspect you are struggling with, a coach can help.
